Subject: [*] AliasZoo 2.0.2 update
AliasZoo is a utility to locate, verify, repair, rename, and re-connect
alias files on any of your mounted volumes. This version is a
complete re-write of the original AliasZoo and includes a number of
new features:
- The Find and Resolve functions have been seperated. This allows
you to quickly locate and view all the alias files on a drive without
having to wait for them to be resolved (resolving checks that they
still points to something valid).
- Alias files that have been orphaned (they no longer point to their
target file) can be automatically reconnected by AliasZoo 2.0. It will
search for any file with a matchineg file/creator type and a matching
creation date - on ANY mounted drive. If such a file is found, it will
be automatically re-connected.
- Alias files can now be renamed from within AliasZoo.
- The 'Get Info' dialog in AliasZoo now displays the icon of the target
file (in color where possible).
- The interface has been completely reworked. The main window is
now resizable, and the status of alias files are indicated by small
icons (rather than changing the line's color - which didn't work too
well on grayscale monitors).
- You can choose whether or not AliasZoo will resolve aliases to local,
removable, or network volumes independant of one another.
- When resolving alias files to non-local volumes, AliasZoo will not
unmount the volume until it absolutely has to. This prevents you
>From having to enter your password each time a network alias is
resolved.
- Better feedback is given while alias files are being resolved.
- And many other new features, changes, and abilities.
AliasZoo requires System 7, is 32-bit clean, supports the required
AE's, and runs fine on every Mac I have been able to test it on (SE,
LC, CI, Powerbook, Quadra 700-950). This archive includes the
application itself, and a ReadMe document that explains more about
AliasZoo.
Version 2.0.2 fixes the following bugs:
- The divide-by-zero error no longer occurs when volumes with no alias
files are selected.
- The help dialog appears properly on Color Quickdraw equipped machines
with B&W monitors (powerbook, SE/30s, etc).
- The 'Smart' unmounting of network volumes has been made smarter. Things
should work better now for users with more than 10 volumes mounted during
resolve scans.
Shareware. $15.

"ARAClient is a control panel/application maker that adds value to AppleTalk
Remote Access. It adds several features that save time, keystrokes, RAM, and
add
a measure of security. Most users could care less about the details of
telecommunications, they just want to get connected. This utility provides a
one-step connection scheme that promises to let users forget all the details
of
network telecommunications. Users must be using system 7 as well as have
already installed Apple's AppleTalk Remote Access software. ARAClient, and the

** WARNING:
Autograph only works with Eudora. If you don't have Eudora, give up. You
also need System 7.
** WHAT IT DOES
Not much. It changes your signature in Eudora. You can drag and drop a
text file onto Autograph and it'll change your Eudora signature to that.
If you tell it to make a TEXT file into a signature, the next time you
double-click on the file, the signature in Eudora will be changed to it.
The idea is to have a folder of signatures, any which one can be
double-clicked on to change your signature. Oh yeah, if Eudora happens to
be running when you double-click one of the signatures, it'll switch back
to Eudora.
** DAVE-WARE
If you use it, drop me a line (or smile).
** IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED
None. Unless you have a REALLY AMAZINGLY GOOD IDEAT.
I fixed all the bugs you guys talked about. (Aliases of Eudora Folder,
Eudora Settings, etc plus asking for PPC Toolbox)

Subject: [*] Ball & Stick 3.5.1 DEMO submission
Hello,
this is a demo of version 3.5.1 of Ball & Stick, a Macintosh molecular
graphics package, that has just been released. This demo version is
restricted to 40 atoms and overprints outputs with an ordering information.
THE ONLY CHANGE BETWEEN VERSIONS 3.5 and 3.5.1 is that printing problems
that have been observed for some new printer types have been fixed.
Please replace all previous demo versions in your archives.
This is a molecular graphics application working on all Macintosh computers
>From MacPlus upward. It requires at least System 6.07, for color work
32-bit QuickDraw is heavily recommended.
It is System 7 friendly and supports the generation of QuickTime movies.
For those who know the previous 3.0 version here is a list of the main
changes - apart from bug fixes:
Completely new user interface for animation
Creation of QuickTime (TM) movies
Acceleration of all functions, especially reading of structure files
Extended automatic format recognition
Export of coordinate data in different formats
Better background operation
Better memory management
Better label positioning
Optional annotation text in images
Anti-aliasing
Improved real-time manipulation
Precision real-time positioning ("nudge")
System 7 features (drag & drop)
The full package also includes a 200+ organic structure collection and a
floating-point-processor savvy version of the program.

things like stop and play!
Canon 2 contains 2 files... the ReadMe (short and to the point) and the
application Canon 2. They are saved in a Compact Pro archive.
Hardware requirements - Apple Sound Chip (NOT the 128, 512, Plus, SE,

reduce the number of "often asked questions" that make the rounds here
in comp.sys.mac.comm. Since comp.sys.mac.comm is intended as a forum to

here. The proper newsgroup for such questions is usually comp.dcom.modems.

Subject: [*] EasyTransfer (1/4)
Hi folks!
Here is an update of EasyTransfer from version 2.0.0 to 2.0.2
It is currently archived in /info-mac/comm/net
This version contains a bug fix (important!), so it should
be used instead of version 2.0.0. It also has some other improve-
ments which should make life easier.
For those who have not come across it, here's a very short summary
of what it does:
* lets you set up a internet-wide file server on your Mac
* transfers files transparently (ie no BinHex'ing required)
* allows named user or anonymous logins
* allows you to get files from any Mac running EasyTransfer
The enclosed Readme file contains further information.
Thanks all,

Subject: [*] Enigma 2.0 (data encryption program)
Enigma 2.0 is an application which can provide near absolute
protection for your sensitive documents and applications. By
downloading this application you can encrypt files using a limited
version of the Government Standard DES algorithm. For only $15
this can be upgraded to the full DES standard (US and Canada only).
If you would prefer your neighbors not see your accounting data,
your co-workers not see your performance appraisal, or your
competitor see your trade secrets then Enigma is an application you
will find very valuable.
Version 2.0 adds the long awaited vault feature. Vaults are like
very securely locked file cabinets. Multiple files are stored in
them. Files can be added, deleted, renamed, and extracted at any
time. Security is much enhanced because filenames and lengths are
protected by encryption in addition to the contents. No other
free or shareware encryption program offers the flexibility of
Enigma vaults.
Version 2.0 also contains user interface upgrades and bug fixes
which will make Enigma easier to use, especially over a network.
That annoying startup delay experienced by version 1.2 users has
been eliminated.
Enigma 2.0 remains fully compatible with previous versions of Enigma.
Enigma 2.0 requires system 7.0 or later. Documentation enclosed
specifies ordering information for a system 6 or earlier
compatible version, but the vault features are unavailable.
Enigma occupies 100K of disk space and needs only 256K of memory.
Enigma 2.0 in this limited form is completely free. No shareware
guilt. But if you need extra protection it is available.
Enigma 2.0 has been continuously supported and updated for over a
year and I have many satisfied registered users. Thank you for
your interest and support, it keeps me going.

Subject: Monospaced font for coding
There was a recent request for a good monospaced font for programming. I'm
enclosing a binhexed 9pt version of the "Code" font, which I created from
another font I found on AppleLink a while back (I added the slashed zero).
What makes this font great is that there are NO invisible characters - the
characters that are non-printing in most other fonts show up as their ASCII
code inside a rectangle. Zeroes are also slashed, and small "l" does not look
like numeral "1". This is my default font for MPW files (although I print with
courier to avoid sending a bitmap to the LaserWriter). I hope you enjoy it.
Please archive as "Code9.hqx".

Glidel 1.1 is a freeware INIT to Drag-and-Drop icons on Apple Menu Items
or File Menu Items THAT WORK EXCLUSIVELY WITH SYSTEM 7.1 (and beyong ?).
Glidel 1.1 is derived from Fred Monroe's "Dropple Menu" that worked for
System 7.0 and 7.0.1 but broke under 7.1.
The action performed depend on where you drag-and-drop a (File) Icon to:
-- The Apple Menu Icon: move the file to the "Apple Menu Items" folder.
-- A Folder in the Apple Menu: move the file to that folder [or copy it
if the Option key is pressed].
-- An Application in the Apple Menu: same as drag-and-dropping the file
on the application's icon.
-- An Item in the File Menu: same as selecting the file in the finder
then choosing a File Menu Item [One of: Open, Print, Get Info, Duplicate
or Make Alias or Put Away].

Inits R Us StartupScreen
Envious of all of those Mac users who boast of three, four, even five rows
of inits appearing at start-up? Tried to top them but, darn, the old Mac
just seems to crash left and right when you hit extension number
ninety-six?
Here's the solution: a color StartUpScreen (based on the standard Welcome
to Macintosh) with twelve, count'em, twelve rows of extensions and control
panels, fifteen in each row for a total of 180!
Many of them, such as SuperClock and SmartKeys, are probably already in
your system. Some, such as ConflictCauser1.1, ScreenFreeze and
Crash-o-matic, you should be thankful are not.

THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR OF THE LEVEL EDITOR HAS NOTED THE SUBMISSION OF
MAC-SOKOBAN-LEVEL-EDITOR (GAME/SOKOBAN-LEVEL-EDITOR) BY
INGEMAR RAGNEMALM IN ISSUE 95. HE ASKED ME TO SUBMIT A ACTUAL
(UPDATED) VERSION 3.1 TO SUMEX; HERE IT IS !
MacSokoban Level Editor 3.1
MacSokoban Level Editor lets you design your own levels and edit
existing levels of MacSokoban 2.0 or a Sokoban 2.0-file ("Extra" file).
You can save your work as TEXT files or export it directly into MacSokoban.
New is the larger field limit of 24 x 18 signs; a normal level is about
18 to 12 signs, although MacSokoban works not bad with 30 x 18 signs.
The Windows version of Sokoban only has 19 x 17.
Use an ordinary text editor to create or change larger levels.
Some functions :
Turn the level by 90 degree, test the level for the same number of
gold bags and destinations, add bags or the man to destinations ,
Fill area, insert column, cut column, erase signs, kill level (resource),
balloon help and so on.
Of course, there had again to be done a little bit of debugging,
which is made (save level was possible, but switched off).
You'll need Hypercard 2.0 or above & a 13" monitor
With greetings to Don Hewitt, the creator of Bolo Map Editor
and a lot of people writing XCMDs and XFCNs, for example
Steve Drazga, Frederic Rinaldi and Len Saaf.

Subject: [*] Pair Picker 0.2B
Pair Picker is a simple concentration style game with a couple of wrinkles
thrown in. This version only supports two players - future versions will
get into solitaire options and possibly networkability. 52 cards are dealt
in the playing area and the players take turns "flipping" them over to find
a match. When a match is found, the player gets another turn. The first
player to match more than half the cards wins. Ties are settled by
whomever matches the bonus pair. Each player is allowed to "preview" and
"reshuffle" the cards once per game. The graphics and modest animation
support both color and b/w environments. This version is freeware. Please

June 23, 1993
This prerelease version of RIPEM Mac is available for public beta testing.
RIPEM Mac is a public key based cryptosystem aimed at providing
privacy
and authentication capabilities for email users. RIPEM Mac offers encryption
(for privacy) and authentication (or digital signatures for origin
verification) using a hybrid RSA/DES approach as specified by the Internet
Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM) standard. Also supported is an extended triple
DES encryption mode for extra security.
RIPEM Mac is compatible with the emerging Internet PEM standard, including
support for public key certificates providing interoperability with various
PEM implementations such as TIS/PEM and COST PEM available for many
platforms.
RIPEM Mac supports direct encryption/decryption from within BBEdit via BBEdit
extensions and from within most text editors and mailer programs via QuicKeys
and the clipboard. Although oriented towards the protection of electronic
mail, RIPEM Mac supports file encryption as well.
RIPEM Mac is format compatible with Mark Riordan's RIPEM, providing
cross-platform compatibility with many UNIX platforms (incl. SunOS, HP/UX,
NeXTStep, AIX, ULTRIX, Mach, Convex) and MS-DOS platforms for which RIPEM is
available.

Subject: [*] stuffit-expander-302.hqx
StuffIt Expander is designed to be the simplest, most efficient way to
decompress any compressed Macintosh file you may have downloaded from an
online information service or bulletin board system. There are thousands of
such files available, and they are usually stored in one of several
compressed archive formats.
StuffIt Expander extracts files from the three most popular archive-based
compression formats found on the Macintosh: StuffIt archives, Compact Pro
archives and AppleLink packages. All non-encrypted archives created by any
versions of these products are supported, including files created with the
commercial StuffIt Deluxe 3.0 and the shareware StuffIt Lite 3.0.
StuffIt Expander will also decode files which have been encoded by BinHex
4.0 (or a compatible product), such as those commonly found on the Internet.
There is no need to strip out any headers from BinHex files before
converting, StuffIt Expander will ignore anything that is not valid.
Multipart BinHex files, such as those appearing in Internet newsgroup
postings (eg. comp.binaries.mac) are also supported.
StuffIt Expander requires System 6.0.4 or later, and System 7 users
additionally can enjoy an easy "drag and drop" interface. You can also
configure StuffIt Expander to perform periodic checks on the contents of a
specified folder (called a "Watch Folder"), and to expand any newly added
files that it finds.
StuffIt Expander is 32-bit clean, '040 cache and virtual memory compatible,
Apple event aware and has an intelligent background processing scheme that
makes it perfect for expanding groups of files while others are being
downloaded.

Subject: [*] Unmountit 1.0 - CDROM Unmounting Utility
Here is a tool that I found on AppleLink that
solves a problem with ejecting CD-ROMs with Personal
AppleShare running.
This problem occurs when you try to unmount (trash)
a CDROM that won't eject because the CDROM "is being
shared". All you need to do is drag the CDROM
on top of Unmountit and file sharing will be turned
off, the disk ejected and then file sharing turned
back on. Simple.
This tool was created by Jim Luther from Apple's
Developer Technical Support Team and is, "free
software and can be freely distributed by
individuals." Unmountit is part of a package
called FSid that includes other AppleShare tools
that 1) set or disable various options supported by
the AppleShare control panel and, 2) allow the owner
of a Macintosh to start and stop the file server
running on that Macintosh from a remote Macintosh.

Subject: (Q) trouble typing the letter 'o'
I have a strange problem. Often when I type, the letter 'o' will mess things
up in the following ways: (1) typing the letter 'o' will momentarily lock the
keyboard up so that I can't type anything after the 'o', or (2) an 'o' will
strangely double itself so typing the word 'to' will come out as 'too'. This
doesn't happen every time I type 'o', but it happens frequently enough to be
a real pain. It's been a recurring problem for years now.
Some background information:
THIS HAPPENS TO ME ONLY ON MACINTOSHES. I type on PC keyboards and Digital
VAX VT340 keyboards without this problem.
THIS PROBLEM EXISTS ON MULTIPLE MACINTOSHES AND ON SYSTEM 6 AND SYSTEM 7.
EXTENSIONS DO NOT SEEM TO MATTER. I have a PowerBook 140, a Quadra 700, an
SE/30, and a Quadra 950 (some at work, some at home). The SE/30 did this to
me back when it was on System 6.0.7 before System 7 made a debut. It
continued under System 7. It also occurs on machines like my Quadra 950 at
work that were formatted completely separately and have no INITs running in
common with the other machines. Besides the code that is routinely installed
with System 7, the work machine only has INITs for a National Instruments
data acquisition card and a QuadraLink serial card, and I don't run these
INITs on my other machines.
The keyboards on all machines are different.
I type 40 - 70 wpm, but not _that_ fast.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone else know what causes
it?
Thank you.

2.slightly increase its speed over 25 Mhtz;
3.enlarge its hard disk from 40 to 80 MBs;or adapt an extra external

Subject: Applications unusurped (R)
I would like to thank the list members who have very kindly
corresponded with me concerning the "application usurper" problem.
You've helped a great deal, and in the finest tradition of Info-Mac!
To report, I'll restate the problem briefly: In the desktop, my
MacCompress files were being listed as Font/DA Mover files. I
couldn't decompress by double-clicking, only by selecting the file and
choosing "expand" in the menu. Configuration: SE 4/40, Sys. 6.0.7
with lots of inits, cdevs, etc.).
The solution seems to be to rebuild the desktop. That done, things
now appear to be back to normal. However, I can contribute
something in the way of a Mac-superstition: I'd discovered a copy of
Font/DA Mover in an archive in the system folder. Simply deleting
the file seemed to solve the problem. Why that should happen I
have no idea. Perhaps capturing files is Font/DA Mover's way of
coming up for air if it's nested too deeply?
I've also discovered that Desktop Reset bombs on System 6. That's
my fault. I'd just downloaded it for Sys. 7 before moving to my
"summer Mac" and lost the documentation in the shuffle.

Subject: ARA problems
I am trying to connect my home mac to the office using Appletalk Remote
Access (ARA) and am having problems with the modem connection. The
problem (I believe) is with the extra waiting caused by the
'automated attendant' at the office.
We are able to connect the office to home without a problem. However,
when calling from home to office, nothing works. To call in, you dial
the number, wait for the recording, then enter the extension
number. After a short pause (5 seconds or so) the office modem
picks up (you can hear the modem screech) but the home modem seems
not to react. All you can hear is the changing tones of the modem.
We have Global Village Teleport/Gold modems at both ends. I've tried
commas between the phone number and extension number
(ie 123-4567,,,123) and have used Global Village manual dialing
ARA script (use the phone to get connection, then press enter).
All I can get is screeching modem sounds but no modem connect.
Can anyone give me an idea how to proceed. The tech support at
GV is trying, but so far have not been able to help.
THANKS in advance!

Thanks to Al Bloom and Jonathan Brecher for help with my font problems.
Seems that Cupertino was in an old style suitcase where double clicking
didn't show you anything, and you had to use Font/DA mover to copy the
innards to a new suitcase first.
My problem with Cheq may have been a problem with the way Downline handled
the file after it was downloaded. When I looked in my "Downline Out"
folder, I didn't see anything, but in my "Downline Bad Files" folder there
were two files; one cheq.sit and one cheqsithqx. When I tried unstuffing
the first one I got the corrupted archive message. I hadn't thought of
trying the second, since it had an MS Word icon (the first one had a generic
document icon). After I received a message from Jonathan saying that the
file was okay as far as he knew, I tried downloading it again...and got the
same two files, with the same result when I tried unstuffing the cheq.sit.
So...I decided to take a chance on the second one. Voila! That was it!
Worked like a charm.

-- I agree with "loose" - "noose." However, "lose" - "blues" strikes me
as a regionalism (what isn't? :->). A Californian, for example, might
pronounce the last three words of "Did you lose Lew's hues?" with
the same vowel. In fact, "Kool-Aid" often becomes "cue-laid" rather
than rhyming with "fool-aid." Rather, I make "lose" rhyme with
"whose".
Perhaps Hypercard developers for TESOL can tell us whether simple
vowel anticipation is at work or whether (u) is actually drifting to (y)
or at least (iu). (The CMS system here doesn't upload my square
brackets). That is, low back rounded to high front rounded. Some 25
years ago, American students typically struggled to say (y) in French;
now they seem to have more trouble with (u). Who (not "Hugh")
knows, maybe we're taking a phonetic high road or low road to
Scotland.
I'll hold off on joining CAPER, though I sympathize with those who
have spelling demons.

I know that this REALLY isn't the forum to ask this, but I don't have access

I need to set the color of a text cell (call it $A$1) to RED if another cell's

I wanted to make a formula like:
=IF($B$1 < 0,Make.Cell.Red($A$1),"")
but I couldn't figure out how to make a function perform the formatting
command =FORMAT.TEXT(,,,,,3) (i.e., set the selected text to RED). I couldn't
even get the function Make.Cell.Red to pass a cell which could be selected (
although I did get a command macro to do this, however command macros are run
manually and wanted this to work automatically).
Anyone have any idea how to do this? I know it SHOULD be possible, but I just
don't understand the manuals well enough to figure it out (there aren't any
really good examples of doing something like this).
I would be most grateful for any suggestions (and let me know if you need more

I highly recommend Language Systems FORTRAN. Their recently announced

before. The compiler is quite fast and the compiled code blazes (call
Language Systems and have them mail you specs). The tech support

very good student pricing, though I don't remember the exact amount.
They also have academic pricing available.
LS FORTRAN runs under MPW, but you learn as little or as much MPW

I agree there is no excuse for allowing more characters to be

"Real" DES only has 8 character passwords. The encryption is
performed on 64-bit chunks using 56-bit "keys" which are derived
>From 8 7-bit ASCII characters.
I'm not sure about this, but I've heard that multiple-DES
encription does NOT provide additional security. This may have to
do with the fact that DES is a cyclic algorithm: You perform 16
DES cycles to encrypt the file, and then the SAME 16 DES cycles
to decrypt using the same key. In addition, there was some
research which suggested that different keys led to the same
result; in other words, multiple passwords might be interchangeable.
In addition, DES is an old encryption algorithm which is showing
it's age. It is by no means uncrackable with current computer
technology. It is, however, more than enough to stop prying eyes.

Subject: Powerbook 140
I am considering buying an old powerbook for word processing. I do not
want to go overboard on purchase price because I don't want to be
overly concerned about losing it on a late-night subway ride or
otherwise destroying it.
Shreve systems (Shrevesport LA) has advertised "demo" 140s at $1050
and "demo" 100s at $850. Both have 2 meg RAM and 40 meg HD. Since I
would prefer 10 megs RAM, I like that I will not be replacing a RAM card
in either, just putting in 6 (100) or 8 (140) memory modules.
I am wondering if the $200 is a very small difference to pay for the 140?
Or, does the 100 have features that the 140 doesn't? I know that the 68000
(100) is slower than the 68030 (140) but perhaps being able to use the 100
as a hard drive and other features may sway my decision.
My questions are: Is the 100 the only Powerbook that can be used as a
hard drive?
Does that 100 have a better RAM disk option?
Is the 100 without the external floppy drive attached much lighter than a
140?
Are there any other factors to be considered?
Can I get a Powerbook 100 cheaper than $850?
What is the address of the Powerbook list?

Are you sure it's error #25 and not #2?

Yes, it is probably Quark but proably NOT one of the extensions.

When you install Quark, make sure ALL virus programs and inits are turned
off. I had this problem when I first got Quark, did a new install with
EVERYTHING turned off, and it has worked well ever since.

This is an update, Ulaw 1.3, on a previously archived version (ulaw
1.1b) which lives in the sound utilities [mac-to-sun-ulaw-11.hqx or
ulaw1.1b.cpt.hqx]. This version is considerably faster and has
enhanced drag and drop capabilities. It supports and requires Apple
Events (System 7).
The program converts both directions between mac files with sound
resources and Sun Ulaw format sound files.
As a bonus there is a second small application called UlawPlay 1.0b
which plays Sun Ulaw files and MIME headerless Ulaw files by a drag
and drop mechanism (only). In fact it will "play" any data fork of
any file interpreting the data as a headerless ulaw encoded sound
after first checking for a Sun Ulaw files header.

Subject: Screen Size reducer (Q)
Dear Netters,
Does anyone know of a freeware/shareware product that will take an 8 bit Color
o
r less program and reduce its window size to 512 x 384 including menu bar from
a
larger resolution? I would like to use some 640 x 400 or 480 resolution
games on my 12" Apple RGB. Thank you.
P.S. some games are ResEdit proof! As I try to reduce the window, and yet the
programmmer inserted an ALERT resource to prevent any smaller screens from
being used. Thus I would hope for some other way of reducing the effective
applicatioon window size.

Subject: ScuzzyGraph - Ratings?
REPLY TO: oleg@ddrsrv.dny.rockwell.com
Hello all netters,
I was looking at the ScuzzyGraph unit from aura systems. I have 5 Mac Plus'
and 6 SE's. Our company believes that these units still have book value, so
I can't just go and replace them with Centris, Quadras, or LC III's. I know
there are accellerator boards out there that have a video port (i need
accelleration, too) but none that I have seen support color. I really would
like color, but not if the performance is SOOOO bad that it defeats the
purpose. Any suggestions or tips would be great (on ScuzzyGraph or
accelerator w/video out ports)

Subject: Speed Comparisons (Q)
Dear Netters,
Has anyone attempted to do a speed comparison of Motorolla and Intel
processors using the MIPS or Mflops standard? If so I would be interested in
receiving a copy of that comparison list. As there are many processors,
please only send 68000 or faster, and 8086 or faster in the comparisons. It
would also be interesting to see what speeds the RISC processors have as
well.
This is just a curiosity question, as I understand a 68040/25 Mhz is faster
than a 68030/40 Mhz, and wish to see a comparison based on an unconfused
standard.
Thank you.

Using "Set Start-up" with System 6, it's possible to create bootable floppies
with only a System file and an application.
What does "Set Start-up" change?
Is it possible (on a machine only capable of running Sys 7) using ResEdit, to
do the same thing as "Set Start-up" for Sys 6 bootable floppies?
Thanks!

I've worked with Times Two, AutoDoubler and now, finally, NowCompress.
***********************
AutoDoubler (file-level compression)
- Safe
- very slow on less than a IIcx
***********************
TimesTwo (driver-leve compression)
- easy to use
- dangerous if you have system crashes
- difficult to monitor compression (hard to see what is actually
compressed and how much)
***********************
NowCompress (file-level compression)
- safe
- effective
- excellent user interface
- works in 6 or 7 (and transfers from one to the other fine)
- wonderful manual (as with all Now Software products)
***********************
I do not work for, nor am affiliated with any of the above companies,
just an end-user trying to find the best product for my needs.

Subject: Think twice before buying LaCie (R)
Dear Niko Sahtaridis and concerned others,
I was very disturbed by your post on LaCie. Everything that I had heard
and the small experience that I've had from them has been very good
(I've got a 240MB external on the way).
I was so disturbed (and concerned), that I contacted Scott Faden
(extension 234) who is a Customer Service representative (second only to
Don Abdalla, who is the Customer Service Director). I faxed him a copy
of your post (with your name removed for your protection) so that he and
I could discuss it.

Scott said that although LaCie does NOT have a toll-free international
number yet, they are happy to call you back immediately (so that the
call is on their dime and not yours). He said specifically that he
would be happy to do that if there are any unresolved issues regarding
your particular problem. He emphasized that this was LaCie company
policy and they are happy to make whatever accommodations possible for
international customers.

Scott said that during that time period LaCie was installing a new
tracking system and may have had difficulty telling if the scanner had
actually been shipped out yet or not.

Scott said that in a circumstance such as the one you've described
above, LaCie will immediately repair or replace and negotiate with the
courier company they use later. He stated that the customer should not,
of course, be penalized in any way for damage occuring due to shipment.

Scott said that all customers had been (or at least should have been)
informed that the manual that was shipping was a BETA manual only and
that the full manual was due out by July 30.
I'm not sure what discrimination you might be referring to, but from
what I've seen and heard LaCie is very apologetic about the situation
and is very anxious to correct the problem. Please call them and let
Scott rectify the situation.

When I told Scott that this post had been distributed world-wide on the
Internet and that I was going to respond on the Internet, he was very
pleased. This just underscores why it is important to post problems
like this on the Internet. The Internet has power! use it to our
advantage.
Please post again if LaCie fails to resolve this to your satisfaction.

Hello, everybody.
Has anybody had any good experience buying used Macs? I'm looking for
IIfx or IIx Macs, or something similar (for a friend who will use them
just to let customers view their PageMaker documents before printing
them).
The only places I've heard of are the ones at the end of MacWorld or
MacUser, where they just fight for the lower price...
Please reply directly to me, as I'm a bit late reading the digest...
Thanks a lot for any info. Best,
